Why the interest?

RockTape’s taping protocol is quickly becoming the standard for kinesiology taping in the medical industry. The RockTape courses are Australia’s most popular kinesiology tape courses. In 2015 we conducted in excess of 100 full and half day courses, attended by more than 2,000 people. Why the interest?

Unlike other methods, RockTape’s taping protocol is based on an ‘open-source’ philosophy; we don’t believe there’s only one right way to tape. In our courses we teach a framework of taping – concepts, not recipes so it’s much easier for attendees to apply clinically to their customer group – ie. lower limb, upper limb, paediatric, geriatric, lymphoedema etc. We welcome applications and techniques that our attendees have developed using their own clinical reasoning. This community based approach to taping integrates concepts from all other methods and provides a framework for the practitioner to determine the best approach for them and their clients.

All courses have a significant practical component which allows an opportunity for the attendees to practice many applications, which is important given the process is quite different to rigid taping techniques. This ensures they feel confident enough to start using RockTape with their clients when next in the clinic, gym or sports change rooms, and they have many application ideas to draw from.

You can host your own course

Some clinics are now choosing to host their own half day or full day RockTape courses to enable their small group of practitioners to enjoy a small group learning environment and the ability to focus the session to the types of taping that are best suited to their clientele. One such course was recently held in Melbourne’s Patterson Lakes:

“I would like to pass on our appreciation for setting up the workshop within our clinic last weekend as we all gained and immense amount of knowledge out of the course as it was particularly structured to our needs. I have applied a number of the techniques today and can’t wait for patient feedback in regards to this. I also have many more clients in mind to play with the techniques further.”

NEW from RockTape, the ultimate weapon for workout domination - Assassins, an entirely new generation of knee sleeves.  Assassins will keep you ahead of the game - keeping your knees supported and protected while slaying reps and crushing WODs.

  • Provide joint support during grueling workouts and lifts
  • Protect the knee from abrasions during lunges or obstacle course racing
  • Provide VMO (vastus medialis oblique) support
  • Stay put with a unique organic design, won’t slip down during activity
  • Keep the knee joint warm between exercises
  • May help reduce non-specific knee pain
  • May help improve patella tracking over the knee cap

Assassins can be used in a variety of sports and fitness pursuits, including: weightlifting, high-intensity interval training, obstacle course racing, running, cycling and other functional fitness endeavors.

Assassins are available in sizes extra small through extra large, with two thickness options: 5mm for moderate support and 7mm for maximum support.

Built for Competition

Assassins were formulated with the unique needs of athletes in mind, and unlike sleeves from other companies, are much more than a re-purposed medical knee support.

We fine-tuned Assassins through three years of feedback from both RockTape customers and professional athletes like 2008 CrossFit Games® Champion Jason Khalipa.

The result is a pair of knee sleeves that are suitable for the most grueling workouts, lifting events, and obstacle course races - yet comfortable enough for the weekend warrior.

Designed for Performance

Taller than standard sleeves, and carefully constructed with a unique organic design, Assassins support the knee and compresse the vastus medals oblique (VMO) at its insertion point above the patella. This helps ensure proper stability and tracking of the knee, and can often dramatically reduce non-specific knee pain, particularly during squats.

The extra-tall design also keeps sleeves in place - preventing excess slippage and shifting during workouts - a common complaint of competing sleeves.

Uncompromising Value

Protective gear should always be reasonably priced and available to anyone. We also believe that every athlete deserves two sleeves - that's why Assassins are always sold as a pair.

When compared to the competition, Assassins' quality and price can't be matched.

Nearly Indestructible

Engineered with a synthetic fabric shell bonded to SBR neoprene and secured via double-mauser stitching, Assassins comfortably support the knee joint through countless workouts.

Rigorous life-cycle testing by both our own athletes and automated test programs guarantee superior quality. If any pair of Assassins fails to carry out their purpose, RockTape offers the industry’s only one-year warranty against defects and premature failure from date of purchase.

Specifications

  • SBR Neoprene
  • Double Mauser stitching
  • Durable-yet flexible front panels
  • 4-way stretch lycra side panels
  • Extra tall design for VMO compression

RockSauceChill is a cooling gel containing aloe and arnica.  The unique formula provides a soothing cooling effect and can be easily applied using the roll-on applicator.

The applicator contains 88.7ml of RockSauce Chill and is the perfect size to throw in your sports bag or RockNRoller.

How does RockSauce  Chill differ to RockSauce you may ask?  The original RockSauce has menthol and wintergreen (methyl salicylate) so has a cold and heat response, and the traditional liniment smell from the wintergreen.  The RockSauce Chill has menthol with some aloe and arnica, so it has just a cold sensation without the following heat.  There is also no capsaicin in the RockSauce Chill.

If you want to combine the use of RockTape and RockSauce Chill, then we recommend applying the RockTape first and then applying the RockSauce Chill over the top of the RockTape.  The RockSauce Chill will pass through the RockTape and then provide the cooling sensation.

The best topical to combine with RockTape remains the original RockSauce.

What is RockTape Equine and Canine?

RockTape Equine is a kinesiology tape that has a unique adhesive perfect for use with equine and canine patients.

Unlike traditional rigid tape which utilises compression and immobilization in treatment, RockTape Equine activates the nervous and circulatory systems to initiate healing and is used to assist in the treatment of:

Injured muscles – RockTape Equine is applied along the length of the injured muscle and as the elastic tape recoils it lifts the skin from the tissue below. This has an effect of:

  • reducing the sensation of pain
  • promoting circulation assisting in the reduction of any swelling or bruising and enhancing the blood flow to the injured muscle.
  • Biomechanical dysfunction – RockTape Equine provides support or stability without restricting the range of motion.
  • Postural dysfunction – RockTape Equine improves the proprioceptive feedback to the area which assists in the retraining of the muscles that maintain the correct posture.

RockTape Equine is used to enhance performance in reducing the negative effects of fatigue.  That is, it doesn’t necessarily make an athlete’s performance greater than baseline measures, but can reduce the drop off in performance that is often evident when fatigue is a factor.

  • Improve endurance as the increased circulation can assist to improve the supply of oxygen to muscles and the removal of the lactic acid.
  • Improve recovery time after intense training sessions or races, as the increased circulation assists in the removal of waste products such as lactic acid.

RockTape Equine can be used as either a sole or an adjunctive treatment in equine or canine therapy.  It can be used to reduce or control pain, manage swelling or oedema, increase joint range of motion and muscle function, and maintain a level of functionality and comfort for the horse throughout the rehabilitation process.  It can also be used to assist the equine to maintain functionality and comfort in training and assist with recovery, thus facilitating overall soundness in the equine athlete.

Key Symptoms that RockTape Equine may assist:

  • Muscle Strains or Tear
  • Muscle Stiffness
  • Post Acupuncture / Body Work Inflammation
  • Prolong the Effects of Myofacial Release
  • Tendonitis, Tendonopathy or Desmitis
  • Rehabilitation, Management and/or Prevention of Movement Dysfunctions

Safety It is important to note that some horses may behaviorally react to the RockTape Equine, just as they would a nuisance fly on their skin. This is due to the horse’s highly evolved proprioception mechanism that is regulated and monitored from receptors located in the muscles, tendons and joints. Always position yourself in a safe place in relation to the horse when applying RockTape Equine.  It is advisable to lunge the horse once the tape has been applied to determine the effect of the tape on the horse, prior to riding.

Testimonial from Amanda Ross – individual competitor at the 3 Day Event at the Sydney 2000 Olympics

“For me, every little opportunity counts. It’s about always being an unrestricted participant, never missing a chance, finding new ways to do something better, and living life to the fullest. RockTape isn’t going to make me taller, lose 5kg’s, or turn me into an Olympic triathlete…

However, using RockTape has given me back my upper body strength by helping rehab my tennis elbows, corrected my posture on a horse so I ride more effectively, and allows me to help my horses by correcting their gait when I can’t explain it to them in English! Rocktape is easy, non-invasive, and proven… It’s all about the things that help me stay in the game!”

The manual contains taping applications for both the horse and the rider. Some of the taping applications for the horse have been extrapolated from methods used with much success in humans. However, horses have a very finely developed afferent neural system compared with humans, so the effect of taping horses can be dramatically exaggerated compared with taping humans.

The sections of the manual cover applications:

  • For the horse including shin soreness, tendon and ligament injuries
  • To assist the posture of the rider including upper back, wrist position and head position
  • To assist the rider overcome injuries including lower back, knee and polo/polocrosse elbow taping
  • To enhance performance through the use of Power Taping techniques.  Power Taping is utilising the benefits of kinesiology taping to tape the muscles associated with a particular activity, linking the muscles of the appropriate kinetic chain, ie. lower back, hamstring and calf muscles that make up the posterior chain.

The RockTape Equine manual has 107 pages and over 200 images to assist readers get the most from their use of RockTape Equine.

The Foreward is by Gillian Higgins, founder and presenter of Horses Inside Out.

Developed and written by Tyana Lawless, Dr. Steve Capobianco and Greg van den Dries.

Power Taping manual - Version 3.2

Theories and Practical Applications of Fascial Movement Taping.

This comprehensive kinesiology taping manual makes using RockTape very easy.  It is a step by step instruction manual with 226 pages and over 100 photos.

The manual covers the basics of using RockTape, some assessment methods, and then has a vast section of taping for common injuries of the upper and lower extremities, as well as spinal pathologies.  There are also sections showing how to use RockTape for correcting posture, managing oedema, and even utilising RockTape during pregnancy.

The manual also covers Power Taping in depth - the theory behind it and the application of tape for the various fascial chains initially described by Thomas Myers in his Anatomy Trains concept.

Written by Steve Capobianco and Greg van den Dries, with a foreward by Thomas Myers, this manual is a "must have" reference tool for every clinic and regular user of RockTape.

RockBlades are a new IASTM system, comprising of two tools, RockRub emollient, cleaning wipes, and a quick start guide, RockBlades can have you and your patients enjoying the benefits of IASTM immediately.  Every RockBlades set comes with two tools - one stainless steel and one a more portable, lightweight plastic tool.

We call the stainless steel tool the “Mallet.”  Why?  The mallet is the most versatile tool you can have in your toolkit.  And you will find all that versatility in this surgical grade stainless steel IASTM tool.  Hand polished treatment surfaces, combined with a perfectly balanced and weighted core make it a joy to use day in and day out in the clinic.

The mallet has matte-finished dimples, four on each side, combined with the “brass-knuckle” style handle, enabling you to hold the tool 6 different ways.  Each side is unique – both in shape and edge radius.  This gives a huge range of treatment options and therapist grips.

The plastic tool is called the “Mullet.”  This is because its business at the front, and all party at the back - just like that 90’s haircut!  This lightweight tool is designed to be portable, allowing you to deliver superior soft-tissue manipulation wherever the job takes you.  The Mullet is made from an incredibly durable thermo-plastic polyamide, the same material used in high-performance automotive and aerospace applications.  It has numerous treatment edges, much like the Mallet, but when the hard day’s work is over, the integrated bottle opener will make sure you never go thirsty!

The RockRub emollient is the perfect medium for IASTM work, and the cleaning wipes can be used to clean the tool between patients, as well as wiping down the patient’s skin before you apply your RockTape.

Why IASTM?

Your hands are the most important tools you have right?  So you want to keep them in tip-top condition.  IASTM can relieve the pressure on your hands for some soft tissue applications.  The Mallet can also be an extremely sensitive tool to assess for soft tissue restrictions, and then provide an alternative method to relieve these areas of tightness.  Whilst it looks serious, the Mallet can provide a very gentle treatment effect, as can the Mullet being a lighter version.  In fact, we discourage unnecessarily heavy applications that have traditionally been used in the IASTM method.  Just like with our taping methodology, we believe that IASTM can induce powerful treatment effects by working on the superficial tissues and no doubt influencing the nervous system as much, if not more than the soft tissues themselves.  For these reasons, the Mallet and the Mullet can be perfect additions to your treatment armoury and help you and your patients “Go Stronger, Longer”.
